Throughout the process of my divorce case in Sharea courts, I was forced at times to elaborate on some past events in my past-marital life to the judge. And each time I finished with a story, the judge would demand verifications from my husband. And although my husband never denied any charges, he’d always have a different version of the same incident. This was not new between us; throughout our marital life, this had been the norm; he accused me of exaggeration, and I accused him of being a liar who pretended not to remember details to get away with murder. It was hard for me to believe that such an intellectual, who’d be able to skim through a page, turn it over, and memorize its entire content, would not be able to memorize personal events in his own life. And as the years passed; I was convinced that my husband had a weak memory when it came to his life experiences, for at times there was no need to lie about other incidents, but he did, of course, according to my version of the story. This was really confusing for me, I even doubted at times whether I was exaggerating as he claimed. The probability that one wouldn’t see one’s own mistakes, and zoom-in the mistakes of the other party, was valid for both of us.
Hence; was he a liar? Or was I exaggerating?
Let’s examine briefly how the brain, especially the neurons associated with memory works:
For a very long time scientists believed that the brain contains neurons that are fixed in number, like a solid piece of marble. And that, unlike all other cells in the body, neurons do not die natually each day and regenerate themselves, and that the hippocampus; which is believed to be the central storage unit of our long-term memory, stores past information as photographic images that are indelible. This notion is a point of controversy today between neuroscientists, according to some current findings, especially after the advancement in the field of electrobiology and medical instrumentation, and the fact that neurons are like any other cells in the body; die and regenerate themselves. Scientists now believe that, as quoted by Jonah Lehrer in his book Proust was a Neuroscientist, “each neuron has only a single nucleus, it has a teeming mass of dendritics branches. These twigs wander off in every direction, connecting to other neurons at dendritic synapses (imagine two trees whose branches touch in a dense forest). It is at these tiny crossing that our memories are made: not in the trunk of the neuronal tree, but in its sprawling canopy.” Which means that information is stored between the gaps of the neurons, which are subject to change. And quoting Lehrer again in the same source, ”Every time we conjure up our pasts, the branches of our recollection become malleable again. While the prions that mark our memories are virtually immortal, their dendritic details are always being altered, shutting between the poles of remembering and forgetting. The past is at once perpetual and ephemeral… The memory is altered in the absence of the origional stimuli, becoming less about what you remember and more about you.” and ”our memories are not like fiction, they are fiction.” Or to picture it in a more aesthetic way through the kaleidoscope of the French novelist Marcel Proust in his book Swann’s way, “how paradoxical it is to seek in reality for the pictures that are stored in one’s memory…the memory of a particular image is but regret for a particular moment; and houses, roads, avenues are as fugitive, alas, as years.”
If these findings are correct, then this means that neither my husband is a liar, nor am I an exaggerating brat, we are just elaborating our version of the story according to what each of us saw through a personalized lens that is sensitive to our circumstances and beliefs.
What does this have to do with my title?
Everything, but that will be discussed in the next post
