(Elie Wiesel)
“Because I remember, I despair. Because I remember, I have the duty to reject despair.”
An Update (translation)
Instants of Contemplation
At these historical times, a deep longing to be in Kuwait overwhelms me. But since it is not possible for me to be there physically , I only resort to surfing the Net; reading electronic newspapers and magazines, checking blogs and forum to be able to grasp the general outcome of this period. And unfortunately; the general mood of Kuwaitis in this period, as I perceived, was despair.
I’m not here to blame anyone for that; the situation is very complicated and integrated like a knitted piece of colored fabric, when one thread is pulled, the rest of the threads come loose. But what I will talk about now is “Despair”.
There is an old cliché that says, “there is no despair with hope”, but Chinese wisdom, and Far-Eastern religions treat despair differently, for they believe that despair is the consequence of high hopes; when one has high hopes and dreams to accomplish a task and he is disappointed constantly with the results, he’d resort to despair. And therefore to eliminate despair, they believe that one should eliminate hope. And hope here denotes the exact results that the person sought or his high, unreachable dreams. And therefore we see contentment plays a vital role in the lives of nations that have such beliefs. They don’t live their past, they don’t expect much from future, they only live the moment.
And that was always a source of amazement to me every time I visited Thailand; people who live under tin ceilings, surrounded by walls of bed-sheets, and earn their daily bread by selling consumer goods on spread sheets in front of, what they figuratively call, houses, gather for each meal with happiness and contentment reflected on their relaxed faces. They seem to only live moments of the now. Or the current instant. (One wonders sometimes if they ever have serious problems).
One of the quotes of Elie Wiesel says, “Because I remember, I despair. Because I remember, I have the duty to reject despair.”
The past is just a history and a number of events in the memory that can’t be lived today. But nevertheless, its experiences can be taken as a general guide. And future is unpredictable, because of its inexistence in the now, and no matter how much science advances, future remains at the hands of the unknown. The most that one could accomplish is to draw probable outcomes based on the information we have now and the historical data we gathered in the past, and also dependant on our current sought direction now.
Last night I walked to a nearby restaurant with my son. In our way we passed a car-wash station, which has flowerbeds surrounding it. In winter those flowerbeds seem empty, but in spring a fair of colored flowers dominate them to a noticeable change. At some instant, a bunch of tulips grabbed my attention; they were blooming for the first time in those beds ever since I walked this road two years ago. I stopped to contemplate and take some pictures, while my son scolded himself for not noticing them before although he takes this road daily to his college, and he concluded that I must have an inherent power of perception. But was he right in drawing such conclusions? I do not believe so
I believe that my son, with a constantly busy mind; thoughts of the near past, like, “ did he forget to do an assigned homework for the day?” or “ did he forget anything at home before leaving?” Or even thoughts of the future, like, “ would I reach my class on time?” or “ would I find a close-by parking space?” all override his thoughts, exclude him from the present reality and eliminate all his five senses. And this is the case with most of us. We usually don’t see, hear or enjoy our surroundings because we do not live the instant.
The instant is not a period of time that can be measured, but it’s the now and it’s relative to us. When I started writing this post for example; the instant was then. And now while I write these words, the instant is my living experience of the now. And therefore knowing the importance of the now is vital when we project its outcome in the future, provided that we wouldn’t concern ourselves with the bad, wasted energies of despair according to the information we have up to now. This instant is of our making, while the past and the future are elements beyond our control. And therefore it is our duty to benefit from this instant and not waste our energies by resorting to despair or even hope.
The instant requires concentration, gathering forces and participating in drawing short and long plans. Planning does not guarantee our success to reach the goals we sought, because the outcome is still in the future that we cannot predict, and it is dependant on other elements that we cannot foresee. But it means drawing the path or different paths that could be altered as we take them to the best of our benefit.
An instant could mean hard work, as it could mean procrastination and laziness. It could mean accumulative loss of time or it could mean eternity. It all depends of what action we take in this instant.
An instant could change the outcome of events from one extreme to another. What is important is to know what should be done at this instant to specify our direction and reap the best we can from this instant.
